Description: The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center is currently conducting a study to understand factors related to health and home safety, and examine whether fear of uncertainty plays a role in home safety practices. They are interested in exploring these factors among firearm owners who currently, or have recently, served in the U.S. military. This study takes place entirely online, using videoconferencing software.

Eligibility criteria:

  • 18 years of age or older
  • Currently serving in the U.S. military, or were discharged from the U.S. military within the past 90 days
  • Own at least one firearm located in your home or vehicle
  • Have an Apple or Android smartphone

Participants will complete a screening survey to determine eligibility and provide their contact information. If they are eligible to participate, a member of the study team will contact them to complete additional surveys and schedule them for three virtual visits using Microsoft Teams.

Participants will be asked to complete brief surveys on their phone six times each day for 28 days. Each survey will take approximately two minutes to complete. Participants will also complete follow up phone or video visits and assessments on their own at 1, 3, 6, 9, and 12 months.

Description: This study is being done to identify which strategies are most useful for reducing emotional distress among military personnel.

Procedures and Tasks:

If you agree to participate, you will complete a questionnaire that asks about your feelings, thoughts, moods, and behaviors. You will also be asked about your demographic information, prior and current mental health treatment, and your interest and ability to complete various aspects of the study. As part of this eligibility screen you will be asked to provide your name and contact information. Your responses and contact information will then be reviewed by the researchers.

If your responses suggest you might be eligible to participate, a researcher will contact you to provide you with more information about the study, and to schedule an interview to confirm your eligibility. Upon meeting with a researcher, you will be asked to show your government-issued Common Access Card to verify your identity and confirm your active duty military status.
